Thoughts for a Plot

Years ago, there was a huge rift between magic users and mortals. (Muggles for lack of a better term) The mages being an “upper crust” of society. If you had magic, you were in the ‘club’ so to speak. They ran the country, (and still do to a degree) providing services such as the military, education and healthcare. Not every one was happy with this, but hey, what could a mortal do against a corrupt system of magic?

That being said, there was a system in place that many truly despised the Mages for The ‘Scouting System.’ This was a program put in place by the Government to find any Mortal who had the potential of magical talents. Essentially, officials would go into a home and bring a child into the Mage’s society. Sending them to a boarding school away from their families, where, isolated and cut off from their parents and siblings they were segregated from their Mortal roots. Mortal families were compensated of course, but that didn’t stop a growing hatred against the Mage system, or division in social class leading to the development of the slums. Parents would see their children begin to grow into the Mage class, while their siblings would resent them for their favouritism. Alienated, the Mage children would integrate further into their new class.

That being said, some Mortals managed to con the Scouting System, by hiding their children. They’d send them off to communities of traveling Mages, who refused to work for the Government, or the Mage-children lived with magical creatures such as elves or Pookas. Of course the Government found out about these ‘Missing Children’ and to stop it, started a huge campaign war against the Creatures and traveling Mages; painting them as thieves and vagabonds. Frightened, people started handing their children back to the Government, while others began to fight back. It escalated to all out war when a pack of traveling Mages attacked a Scouting Officer Mage. (S.O.M. heh heh heh) This lead to the war which “wiped out” the magical creatures that you’ve hinted at.

For the next few years all was rosy for the Mage Government. With no one but Mortals to oppose them, the system of segregation flourished. Until today. After the “Purification” of magical creatures, the magic in the world is beginning to die out. Less Mages are being born, and it seems to tie in with the loss of the magical creatures from years ago. The Government are on the verge of panic as the source of all their political power wanes away. They look for a cure to the dying magic.

Cue one Senator Black. Pitch Black made the connection between the Creatures and the Mage Children. Where ever there have been sightings of Faeries/Other Creatures, children were born with abilities. Pitch proposes that because all the magical creatures were nearly wiped out, the magic in the world was nearly wiped out too. (Perhaps this is the project that Pitch and Sandy work on together?) When he proposes this idea to the Government, he is put in charge of a new ‘Scouting Operation.’ But this time, not only are the Mages looking for the Mage children, they are looking for any magical creatures that may have “sourced” the child’s magic. The creatures are then captured, alive, and brought to Government agencies, where “scientists” (for lack of a better term) use these Creatures to try and find a way of nurturing the magic back into the world. (An idea, perhaps the type of creature influences the type of magic?) These “experiments” have been rumored to be unsavory. Cue the story here.

I kind of like the idea of the rift between those who use magic and those who don’t, which in time would lead to a system of segregation, but it probably wouldn’t last till the time in which the AU is set, mostly because this wouldn’t be a World wide event, only concerning maybe a few countries at much, so it probably wouldn’t last. (There are actually a hell lot of historical examples, but I suck so I won’t go looking for them.) It’s also kind of problematic since the current society isn’t based on just magic, but also technology and science. I think the problem with the whole idea is that it’s closer to a Fantasy setting, when this AU is more orientated toward Science fiction. (I was kind of reminded of Harry Potter in the first few paragraphs.) The whole segregation thing could still work, and be implanted into the historical setting of the AU, but not as something that would last too long. (Maybe half a century after the War?) 

Then there’s the whole magic thing. While some people are born with magical predispositions, I was thinking it’d also be something you could learn, with a lot of hard work and determination. (A hell lot of hard work and determination.) There are magic schools implanted, but they’re quite elitist and not always affordable. The best way for young mages to learn is to become apprentices. (Basically, what Tooth is doing.) Magic is spread the old-fashioned way. It isn’t considered archaic, because it’s highly associated with modern development, medicine, research, engineering—science basically—, because of how the two coexist. With the slaughter of magical creatures, (or “Purification”, ‘cause that sounds atrocious and really cool.) some more ancient magic did disappear, but the impact isn’t all that important to the development of the new modern society, since it’s based on other things than just magic.

Okay, this is a bit embarrassing to admit, but I have no idea what a Senator is or what their role is. :’D (help my french is showing) I actually had a role for Pitch already. (which might change, I don’t know. Help how did this become so serious omg)

Agh, I feel like I left out a lot things I wanted to say, but ugh, I’ll remember them eventually. Seriously, there are a lot of interesting points in your plot idea, (even though, in the end, I still don’t have any plot for a possible story) and I’m probably going to integrate some into the historical setting. Also, I am not spell checking this. no. never.

I don’t think so, sorry! It wasn’t a really serious thing. I’m probably going to draw stuff for it, but I’m not thinking of turning it into anything serious.

Well this is an unexpected message. :’D

I actually don’t think I’ll get any of the book characters involved in this AU, since I know close to nothing of the books. It wasn’t too much of a problem with the Tangled AU since it’s a mix of two Universes, but it’s a lot more complicated with this AU, and I don’t want to mess things up. ; 3 ; I still don’t know how Jack got his ‘Ice magic’, since I haven’t really put much thought to it. I’m still not sure how to get Manny involved in this AU either. I guess I’ll have to think about it. 

As for the story, well I have absolutely no idea. I actually just thought of character backgrounds but that’s about it. *weep*
